India Inc rises among Fortune 500

The Fortune 500 list '04 is out and India fares marginally better than last year. The four PSU oil majors from India (IO, BP, HP, ONGC) figured among the top 500, with RIL Petrochemicals joining the elite league second time in a row. Wall Mart, BP(UK) and ExxonMobil (US) occupied the first three ranks. IO topped the list from India capturing the 170 rank among the 500. India still lags behind China which occupies 15 ranks in the list.

Oil (including petroleum) has always been a prized asset in India, and the recent increase in the prices has had it's effect in increasing the revenues of the oil companies. No wonder ONGC also joined the league this time. But compared to Wall Mart's revenues ($288bn), IOC ($0.5bn) has a very long way to go. One thing we can observe is that all the companies from India that have featured in the list are petrochem majors only, unlike the diverse list of companies that feature from US and other countries.

Feel free to correct the figures in case you know better :).
